In the 1980's, many of Munro American's competitors moved their operations to China to lower their production costs. American workers were being paid $4 to $5 dollars an hour for a 40 hour work week at the time when you could pay a Chinese worker $10 dollars a month with 56 hour work weeks. Don Munro refused to move his operations out of the country, which would cost many American workers their jobs. 

Munro American was at a crossroads in their future. Don Munro gathered his children around and discussed what changes needed to be made. Competitors whose operations had moved to out of the country were selling their product at competitive prices that Munro American could not meet due to the quality of their shoes, and being produced in the USA. It was decided by the family to commit to keeping operations based in the United States. In doing this, Munro American would have to pull out of widespread availability in stores such as WalMart and JC Penny. They would only be available in specialty stores nationwide. This move and commitment to providing quality shoes for women with hard to fit feet has made Munro American what it is today!
